Traditionally Nicholas Mosse Pottery products have been sold unboxed. The display of loose products allow customers to touch the pottery and appreciate the handcraft nature of each item. We were surprised but delighted when Nicholas Mosse Pottery approached us with a request to design retail packaging for several pottery pieces.
We carefully considered each aspect of the packaging project. Each retail box needed to hold the pottery in a secure way and needed to also reflect the handmade nature of the items. The below phrase form Nicholas Mosse Pottery was always foremost in our minds during the design process.
“We love our craft. We believe what is made with love and care emanates love and care. That is the essence of what Nicholas Mosse is about, that’s what we truly believe, and that, we believe, is why this pottery means so much to people. Nick and his team, still to this day, make every single piece of pottery we produce by hand.” Nicholas Mosse Pottery
The items that required bespoke packaging design were; tiny heart plate, trivet and a mug & plate set. We created bespoke box prototypes for each item, taking into account size (for online shopping and postage), display windows (so customers could still touch and feel the pottery), inner format (for secure packaging of each item) and shape (to reduce product costs). The custom box designs also had to add perceived value to the pottery and entice customers to purchase these items as gifts.
Once the shape and structure was finalised we turned our attention to the design that would be printed on each box. As each piece of pottery is available in a wide range of patterns we created a design that would complement each pattern. This design approach for the front of the boxes allows the pottery to be the star so that buyers can see and feel the real thing. We had more freedom in designing the back of the box. We captured the story of Nicholas Mosse Pottery in a visually interesting way which will be of interest to potential buyers. Practical The inner section of the packaging contains care information which eliminated the need to include separate care cards in each box.
From initial box prototypes and colour proofing during printing to assembly instruction videos we oversaw each step of the packaging design project to ensure a great final result.
Each box design is strong enough to keep its shape during travel, easy to post (with a little bubble wrap or packing material) and sure to please the recipients! These gift sets are currently available on the Nicholas Mosse Pottery website and select stockists throughout Ireland.
