We recently designed this label specifically for the Halloween season. Hickeys Barm Brack is a high quality product and the owner felt it needed a label to match these standards in order to be eye-catching in stores around Ireland.
As you can see the new Hickeys Barm Brack label for Halloween mirrors the quality of the product. With a black and gold foil applied the label catches the light and shines, portraying a luxury product. Standing out on shelves against its competitors.
Hickeys sell their tasty Barm Brack all year round, however because this product is specifically associated for Halloween, an eye-catching label was required to pique interest among consumers for this time of year. The Barm Brack now has a stand out label that will increase its desirability as the quality shines through the label.
While designing this labels we were reminded how effective seasonal packaging can be for businesses for different occasions throughout the year.
We decided to look at other brands that have successfully applied seasonal packaging to their products.

10th of October (world mental health day) where Mind Over Matter 2018 took place in VISUAL Carlow where we had 10 professional creatives donating their time for free for an amazing mental health initiative all on behalf of Aware. A national day of creativity throughout Ireland took place, but in Carlow we had entrepreneurs, startup businesses, and established businesses soaking up all of the knowledge from our experienced ten designers and what they had to offer. Our design consultations for Mind Over Matter Carlow began at 9am and ran right through-out the day until 5pm.
Our design team for Mind Over Matter Carlow consisted of Gillian from Penhouse, Mick from UNUM, Liam from McLoughlin Architecture, Elke from Lifepath Designs, Rachel from Lifehack Designs, Eric from Saatchi & Saatchi, Rory from Clickworks, Simone from Simone Hassett Design, James from Threesixty, myself from AKGraphics and Stephanie of course who directed and time managed us throughout the day. A really creative buzz began just before 9am and never stopped throughout the day, it was a proud moment for me to see it all come together under one roof in Carlow last Wednesday. We had professional and experienced product designers, architects, graphic designers, creative strategists, UX/UI designers, packaging designers, web designers, interior designers and advertising creatives – all that talent for a national day of creativity in Carlow.
I would like to say a big thank you to all those people who booked their design consultations with myself (AKGraphics) it was a new experience for me to have seven meetings in a row in one day and it’s kind of a bit like speed dating! I just love speaking to people, hearing their stories and what they are up to and what the next plan is. I had a varied selection of design consultations throughout the day from a scientist, to a beaded Irish jewellery designer, to a training consultancy firm, to an Astrology lover, to a theatre/venue manager, to a hidden food store (that I will be calling into the next time I pass!) that feeds all the manufacturing companies in Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow.
It never ceases to amaze me the amount of businesses out there and what they are up to. Last Wednesday Mind Over Matter Carlow was the day to talk, question, discuss and explore new ideas, advise more effectively, develop a new product/ app for a business, get new business and to talk about business priorities. The people who booked their design consultation had heard about this mental health initiative through social media or word of mouth or through our laser light show on the Braun building, they booked their E75 hour long design consultation and they came through the doors every hour last Wednesday. The people that booked their design consultation were very prepared and knew that in the 60 minutes they needed answers to the queries and questions they prepared. Some were questioning existing ways, some where open to change about how they would do that? Some were doing too many things in their business but not focusing on the top four selling points in the business. From our feedback sheets from all the design consultations in Carlow, we the designers can see the positive effect we had on the day while also raising serious money for Aware.
But this day would not happen without a serious amount of thank you’s to the many, many people that helped us make this happen.
To the main woman who is the brain child behind this wonderful mental health initiative – Kim McKenzie Doyle, a fellow Carlow lady and former president of the Institute of Designers of Ireland (IDI). This is a lady you cannot say ‘no’ to, she just has this energy and drive that oozes confidence. When she approached me this summer little did I know her plan was to make me do public speaking, radio interviews, launches and be the face of Mind Over Matter Carlow. I am delighted she made me do these things that were completely out of my comfort zone, I think if I knew the half of Kim’s ideas I would have run a mile! But to be fair this is Kim’s second year running Mind Over Matter and to raise over E23,500 last Wednesday for Aware, where last year was only E7,000 – that just shows you how determined Kim is. But you also have to see Kim’s idea in networking the talented creative industry in Ireland, through this mental health initiative called Mind Over Matter and that is something that’s growing each year. The design talent we have in Ireland is outstanding and that is where the IDI (Institute of Designers) are pushing that out more and more. Watch this space as this is a lady that is not going to sit still – Kim McKenzie Doyle take a bow from all of us in Carlow and nationwide.
To our main sponsors – without them Mind Over Matter Carlow would not have happened
Mimosa Bar de Tapas, Carlow for providing sponsorship and also for providing ‘Residencia’ for our launch of Mind Over Matter Carlow back on the 30th August. What a positive launch we had in Mimosa for me it was my first big launch to be personally involved in but for Mimosa it was also a big new venture for them with the expansion into ‘Residencia’. The ambiance the food the people just worked beautiful, as per usual Mimosa Bar de Tapas just blew everyone away. Some of our guests had never been to Mimosa before and let’s just say they were quiet impressed and definitely returning. I would also like to say thank you so much for our wonderful speakers at our launch: Lorraine Higgins – Retail Excellence Ireland, Gavin O’Reilly – Silver Spear Gin, Vanessa Tierney – Abodoo and myself of course…
Glasseye – To Janet and her experienced video and production team at Glasseye who prepared all the video production at our Mind Over Matter Carlow launch
DNG McCormack Properties – To Marcus McCormack and all his team
UNUM – To Colette and all her team at UNUM for supporting us
Lennon’s Carlow – To Ross & all his very helpful team
P+D who provided us with all the printed material for Mind Over Matter
IDI – Institute of Designers for all the guidance
I would also like to do a big shout out to Carlow County Council, Local Enterprise Office (Leo) Carlow, Co. Carlow Chamber of Commerce, Carlow Nationalist, KCLR 96fm, Arboretum Home & Garden Centre who helped us to promote Mind Over Matter locally and nationally.
Braun – where our creative laser light show lit up the side of Braun at night for the last month – where all of Carlow could see. It’s been my long term ambition to display graphics on this idle building and I was delighted to see it worked. Thank you to Sean Gallagher for allowing us to use this Braun building, and to Greg Mynhardt of Hedgehog Productions who put this creative laser light show together for us. Plus I would also like to thank ‘Height For Hire’ for lending us the hoist to display our amazing laser light show on the Braun building and lastly to Netwatch for the 24 hour security on this equipment and building.
To Lennon’s Restaurant for feeding all the Carlow designers last Wednesday in Visual with a beautiful tasty lunch that refreshed and revived all the designers for their afternoon sessions. Thank you Ross Byrne of Lennon’s, all of us were extremely grateful for this lunch sponsorship.
To Visual Carlow, to Derek and Eric and all the team from Visual who really I can not thank enough. What an incredible venue firstly but a big thank you to all the team who assisted us greatly last Wednesday for Mind Over Matter Carlow.
To Ballygowan Water for our supply of cooled bottled water to keep the designers brains refreshed throughout the design consultations in Carlow. Also a big thank you to Bewley’s for our supply of coffee and tea to keep us all going also.
To the people on the day who walked into Visual Carlow and gave us donations for Mind Over Matter Carlow – thank you so much. Plus I would also like to thank the people who could not attend on the day, but made donations and rescheduled design consultations for them on other days – thank you.
Lastly a big thank you to all my staff in AKGraphics who kept the ship going and also for putting up with me during these busy times of juggling AKGraphics and Mind Over Matter. Also a big shout out to Stephanie of AKGraphics who kept me calm and reminded me of where I was to be but basically just kept me on track as she does everyday in AKGraphics and as you can imagine that is not an easy task….
To my own family also for putting up with me during Mind Over Matter it was not easy guys but thank you for your patience. I hope sincerely I have not forgotten to thank anyone, but if I did please forgive me.
Thank you to all the hard core creatives (189 creatives in total in 9 different locations around Ireland), who raised an incredible E23,500 for Aware and what a difference that will make…brilliant initiative with a brilliant result – an inspirational event.
Why on earth would someone spend money on redesigning a label for a product that already sells incredibly well?
Hickey’s Barm Brack is a traditional, handmade, yeast-risen fruit loaf. Made in small batches, it is deliciously moist and packed with fruit and flavour. This award winning Barm Brack is stocked in multiple locations throughout Ireland and is utterly divine tasting. Barm Brack features in Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Eatlist so you should definitely try some if you haven’t before.
Barm Brack features in Lonely Planets Ultimate Eatlist
The previous label design
Previous years saw three separate labels applied to the Barm Brack and although there was nothing “wrong” with these labels they didn’t truly reflect the high-end nature of the product. There was also the time taken in applying three labels to each Barm Brack to be taken into consideration.
Originally established in the 1900s, Hickey’s Bakery has been home to no less than four generations of Hickey bakers. Nuala Hickey, the current owner, took the decision to have the Halloween Barm Brack labels redesigned. Nuala’s label printers, The Label Factory, recommended that she talk to us here in AKGraphics. We jumped at the chance to work on such an interesting design project. Lots of research followed, including eating 7 of Hickey’s legendary Barm Bracks, it is very important to have a turn understanding of the product you are designing for! We designed three different options for Nuala to choose from. She selected her preferred option which we made some tweaks to thus arriving at the final completed design. The new label design has a more premium look and better represents the quality of Hickey’s Barm Brack. A “spooky meets luxury” look was achieved.
Hickey’s Barm Brack is truly delicious and deserved a label to match.
During the design process, we worked with The Label Factory to select a textured paper and changed the print spec entirely to include a new custom shape and antique gold foil. This print finishes helped to add an extra special touch.
The bats and spider give a spooky feel
The text around the edge of the label is applied using gold foil.
It’s interesting to approach a design project where the main goal is not achieving an increase in sales. The desired outcome here was to have a label that would help a potential consumer to understand that this is a special, luxury Barm Brack. We feel that the new label design does this and are very pleased with the result. Having said that we are still eager to find out, after Halloween is over, what consumer response has been in terms of actual sales because we believe that design is not just about appearance but about making business more successful too.
Such a great night last Thursday at the 2018 County Carlow Chamber Business Awards in Visual Carlow. To have the opportunity to network with the very best businesses in County Carlow is always great and also the presence of An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was another bonus to the night. To top the night off AKGraphics won the ‘Customer Service – Professional Award’ and what a honour that was to win. Delighted for all the team at AKGraphics who work so hard everyday on behalf of our customers. What a creative design team we have in AKGraphics Carlow who think before they design, who ask questions about the target market, who create a design brief for every job, who understand business and once we get all the answers right we then start the design process. Our design presentations are of a very high standard in AKGraphics as we aim to impress our customers. Once we receive feedback from our customers we then adapt our designs accordingly and prepare final artwork files for print/digital use. Seeing the finished result is still an exciting moment in AKGraphics, a proud moment to view all our hard work. AKGraphics liaise with our customers on a daily basis, to make sure we deliver on time. Our customer service in AKGraphics is second to none as this is one thing that I have always instilled with all staff since starting my business over 20 years ago. AKGraphics have seen many businesses grow from strength to strength, but we still get a real buzz in seeing how our design sells that business, product or service. Repeat business is part and parcel of AKGraphics, gaining the trust of our customers is what we want. Still to this day we get lots of new exciting business coming through our doors in AKGraphics, that’s still what we love to get out hands on. Giving them professional advice and direction to guide them on the right path. Getting our teeth into a new design project is exciting for AKGraphics as we review the competition, the target market and plan our innovative options for that customer. There is never a dull moment in AKGraphics as deadlines have to be met on a daily basis.
A big thanks to all our customers, the marketing companies and marketing people who we work with daily and all our printers who work with us. Thank you to all the judges, the MC/ presenter Eimear Ni Bhraonain of KCLR, the sponsors, Visual Carlow and all the team at County Carlow Chamber of Commerce and lastly all the team at AKGraphics – without you AKGraphics would not exist.

Creating an engaging and friendly environment is important for any business to set the tone of their workplace. Designing an attractive setting for customers when they first come in by using creative wall graphics is a great way to welcome people. A happy workspace for your employees creates a positive atmosphere and is likely to boost productivity and morale.
At AKGraphics we have a vast experience designing wall graphics for all spaces. Any space big or small can be transformed from something plain and dull to something engaging and colourful. Whether that’s wall graphics, signage, or window vinyl, we will design it to suit your specific space. Create a workplace that represents you and your business and leaves a lasting impression for both your workers and customers.
We recently designed wall graphics for our own office here at AKGraphics. We wanted to introduce colour to bring life to the office and remove the blank white walls. By using bright colours and patterns we created a more engaging feel as you walk into the office. We designed a bespoke backlit circular frame featuring our company logo. Additional privacy was achieved by adding window graphics to our entrance area. We also designed new subtle wall graphics for our meeting room, by using white vinyl letters over clear perspex.
Adrenaline HPL approached AKGraphics to develop wall graphics for their new Human Performance Laboratory, offices and gym. Adrenaline HPL had an established brand and logo so we focused on developing this branding for a range of interior office signage. As Adrenaline HPL share the building with other companies it was vital that clients were clear on the location of their office. Each and every piece of the signage reflects Adrenaline HPL’s branding. This attention to detail ensures that the overall look is extremely professional while remaining welcoming for clients.
AKGraphics was asked to add colour and life to Ben Dunne Gyms, but the client also requested that the same design concept could be adapted for all Ben Dunne Gyms (whether large or small). Taking into consideration the new paint colours, the new interior graphics with vivid splashes of colour, swirls of curved lines and branded graphics we created a much fresher feel within the gyms. The final result for Ben Dunne Gyms was welcomed by all gym members. Once we completed one or two gyms it was easy for Ben Dunne Gyms to adapt the same design theme/concept and roll out the new interior feel to other gyms within the group.
If you think your space needs a fresh new look, give us a call and we will design a creative new look and feel for your business! Call us today on 059 91 33633 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
We all have a favourite colour. As designers we know that colour is an element that can change how a visual is perceived.
So what’s your favourite colour? If you are like the majority of the population then your favourite colour is blue!
deep blue sea water with white cloud over sky
Row of colorful flip flops on old weathered blue painted beach decking. Space for copy.
Throughout our years working in design we have noticed that there is rarely a probably with the colour blue. However there can often be a problem with the colour green! In particular lime green! People just don’t seem to like that colour!
According to studies we subconsciously decide our favourite colour based on an object or elements around us that are that colour. For example, blue represents fresh water, oceans, and summer skies. This explains why people favour different colours. You favour a colour based on what you associate that colour with.
Many people hate the colour yellow also. Which is odd as yellow is often associated with happiness and joy. However a number of studies have shown that yellow can cause dizziness and nausea for this reason it is often used sparingly or strategically in advertisements.
You may even be afraid of certain colours! Chromatophobia refers to an irrantional fear of of certain colours. Have you a fear of any colours??
Do you require creative innovative effective graphics for your equine industry based company or organisation?

When choosing a graphic design company knowing that they have experience in your industry can help save time and money.
With over 24 years’ experience, we know a thing or two about offering a one-of-a-kind, tailored and personal approach that fits our customers’ needs. AKGraphics serves a wide range of markets but have a particular interest in producing high quality graphic design for the equine industry. With clients all over Ireland, AKGraphics are proud to be associated with some well know names such as Weatherbys Ireland, the Irish Racehorse Trainers Association and P.A. Solutions.
AKGraphics create creative design solutions specific to the equine industry that will appeal to your particular target market. We listen to our customers and we ensure that we understand their requirements before we begin any design projects. This approach results in a design solution that is above and beyond the current industry standard.
Whether you require a design for a logo, a race card advert, an online advertisement or large graphics for a show or horse truck consider AKGraphics for your professional equine graphics.
Below you’ll find examples of professional artwork AKGraphics created for some of our equine clients.
Punchestown is an important time in the equine calendar, Weatherbys Ireland required a race card advert design, screen graphics and promotional pull up banners for this event. Obviously before we designed any material for Weatherbys Ireland we made sure we understood the Weatherbys’ brand in full. When working with a new client we request a copy of their brand guideline so that we can review in full. We are then aware of the do’s and dont’s regarding the brand. AKGraphics ensures that our graphics adhere to brand guidelines as this creates consistency across different marketing material. We can improve current graphics but yet not go off direction which is important to remember. The next stage of any project is to gather the correct content. That content should consist of professional horse related photography and well written text. All photography supplied to AKGraphics will be reviewed by us to confirm if the images will scale to the print requirements required. We can also source unique photography for our clients if required. By controlling the imagery used a professional overall look can be achieved for every design. Regarding text content, we will review and read in full first to establish what the key message is. Your intended target market for these specific equine design projects should instantly be aware of your message. Once AKGraphics receives and reviews all of the project elements we can then begin the design presentation proposal for our client, creating some varied design options. In this particular case Weatherbys reviewed and shared the design options with their marketing team. Feedback is then required, AKGraphics welcome our clients feedback on any design presentation, as you the customer know your business inside-out and AKGraphics are the visual communicators to represent you in a way that reflects your business and services. Upon written approval of the chosen design concepts for the Weatherbys Ireland Race Card Advert, Screen Graphics and Pull Up Banners we then prepared the final artwork for the chosen printer plus provided final PDFs for email or web purposes. Producing visual results that represent Weatherbys Ireland in a professional manner in the Irish Horse Racing world was an interesting and creative process. Looking forward to partnering with Weatherbys Ireland in the near future.
AKGraphics build ongoing relationships with our equine clients, like any business trust is required in developing successful partnerships. AKGraphics work with many businesses to become their chosen graphic design company. We also partner with some businesses by offering an overflow service, these companies have in-house design teams but use AKGraphics on a regular basis to work on the overflow of design projects that can be required at busy times. The design and marketing departments in these companies trust the experienced AKGraphics team with their brand, safe in the knowledge that we will deliver on time and on budget. As you can imagine, this means that AKGraphics are just as comfortable working within existing brand guidelines as we are creating new ones.
Another equine design project recently completed by AKGraphics, working in partnership with P.A.Solutions, was for IRTA Champions Dinner 2018. While P.A. Solutions role was event management for the IRTA, AKGraphics designed the detailed programme for The Champions Dinner plus the promotional wide pull up banners used for press photography on the night. AKGraphics also designed the detailed slide presentation which was displayed on the widescreen backdrop for the night, which consisted of roughly 90 different slides in total. This slick slide presentation was very visually enticing for the audience on the night, highlighting the many different equine awards and sponsors. Awards consisted of Champion & Leading National Hunt, Champion Trainer, Champion Jockey, Champion Apprentice, Champion Conditional Rider, Champion Amateur Rider, Champion Lady Amateur Rider, Leading Flat Owner, Champion Flat Jockey, Champion Flat Trainer, Champion National Hunt, Champion & Leading National Hunt Trainer and Champion Amateur Rider. The top talent of the Irish Racing world was recognised by the Irish Racehorse Trainers Association so it was essential that the graphic design reflected the professional and celebratory nature of the event.
Other design work completed on behalf of P.A. Solutions includes design for business cards for the IRTA, a generic advert design for P.A. Solutions for use in various programmes etc., a pull up banner for P.A. Solutions and a promotional A5 brochure for the IRTA for the ITBA Expo 2018 in Goffs Sales Complex, Kildare.
A truly comprehensive 2018 Thoroughbred Wall Planner for P.A. Solutions was designed to A1 size as a double sided informative wall planner that highlights Ireland & UK equine events such as Race meetings in Ireland & UK, Point to Points, Horse Sales in Tattersalls Ireland & UK, Goresbridge, Goffs Ireland & UK, Arqana and Keeneland. Each event description on this wall planner is colour coded so that it is easier for the user to view each event per month. This is a great promotional tool for P.A. Solutions to distribute to its equine customers.

Your business card is a first impression, a representation of you and your company/business. A memorable business card could lead to more business.
You may be inclined to think that business cards are no longer relevant in the digital age, however they are the most personal element you can give a client. It has the company name and brand, but it also has your name on it. A business card is a marketing tool that is usually delivered face to face. When it comes to networking successfully, a professional-looking business card can do much of the hard work for you. Having a physical card also gives the recipient the chance to reflect later, this isn’t usually done if you have just added each other on LinkedIn.
If you hand a business card to a prospective customer, there is a chance they will go on to show it to someone else. If you simply swap details or tell them to look up your website you’re relying on them to remember the name or website. However, if they have it in their pocket, they have a small piece of your brand.
A business card also helps to communicate that you are prepared and professional. If you have a small business that people may not have heard of, having a business card adds legitimacy to your business. If you don’t have a well-established business a business card can reassure people that your business is the real deal.
A business card can also help make you referable. Once a customer is happy with the work you have done for them, they can recommend you and your business. The person you initially gave the card to may go on to share the card with someone else.
Some interesting techniques that can make your business card stand out:
From integrating your personal brand to making a solid first impression, there are more than enough ways business cards can help you stand out from your competitors.
There are two primary purposes of your business card: represent your brand and provide contact information. The magic is in the mix of these two elements. A great business card is one that is memorable and is an extension of your brand.
Using a graphic designer instead of using a free online template insures your business card will be a success. The text will all be legible and the card won’t be cluttered. It also means you can add some interesting effects to stand out from the crowd. A graphic designer will have knowledge about different print techniques the could really work for your brand.
A good business card can help make all the difference. The key to a great business card is one that people are hesitant to throw away. Great design will make people want to hold onto your card. The following are some example’s of business cards that are well designed, eye catching and hard to forget.
–A Personal Touch
Using rubber stamps to place your logo on your card makes it feel much more personal, since you’ve taken the time to stamp each individual one, which shows you have an investment in your company or business. This technique would work particularly well for a company with a craft or handmade focus.
Changing the orientation from horizontal to vertical can make your card stand out. Here is an example of a portrait/vertical professional business card.
Xenon business card, designed by AK Graphics. We also designed this logo.
Using a die cut to make a simple graphic more interesting. Here is a creative example of a business card for a cheese company cleverly using a die cut so it looks like a real piece of cheese.
Die cut cheese business card. Design not by AKGraphics.
Using a textured card or a textured lamination can make your business card feel more luxurious
Using cork or wood if relevant to your business. There are many interesting materials available to print your business card on. We have a great knowledge in relation to this and can advise you. Here is an example of a wooden business card which is very unique.
Wooden business card. Design not by AKGraphics.
Utilising a sleeve with a peekaboo window can give you a two for one when it comes to the inner design. Here is an example of a business card with a sleeve and die cut. The design is simple yet very effective. The outer card creating a tooth with a cavity, the inner card having all the relevant information.
Sleeve business card. Design not by AKGraphics.
Creating a completely unique shaped business card can help you stand out from the crowd. Here is an example where a pineapple shape was used. The card was also printed in two colours, making it very eye-catching.
Colourful pineapple shaped business card. Design not by AKGraphics.
Design not by AKGraphics.
A very clever use of a business card is to combine it with a free item to promote your business. Here is a great example where a hairdresser gives out hair pins.
Walsh Whiskey Distillery business card with foil.
Foil can really make a business stand out. It looks amazing and people then want to keep your card. Here is an example of a premium business card that AK Graphics designed. The use of foil on this card makes it stand out. Foil also adds an expensive look to your card which can imply that you are willing to spend money on your business.
–Simple design with bright contrasting colours.
Here is another example of a business card that AK Graphics designed, this card is very professional looking and the use of a bright colour makes it memorable.
