Carlow County Council approached AKGraphics to design an eye-catching advertising campaign with a difference: to tell dog owners to be responsible and pick up after their pooch! Dog fouling is a real and serious problem in County Carlow, both on the streets and in large open spaces. In particular, it has serious health consequences for children who come in contact with dog faeces. Dog fouling remains one of the most complained about issues within councils, and the council needed a strong campaign to address it.
In association with Carlow County Council we wanted to re-educate dog owners and make paths clean for all. Our target market was young and old alike, so our design concepts had to appeal to all ages. The aim of the campaign was to encourage every dog owner to meet their legal and social obligation to their local community.
Using catchy slogans and creative imagery, AKGraphics designed and created a unique animated dog mascot for this anti-dog fouling awareness campaign. The slogans were incorporated into the vivid, colourful graphics which made them very visible to all. Undoubtedly, the text slogans were brash and to the point, but a serious issue needed a new and serious approach. For the younger generation we also created a 5ft cut-out mascot associated with the promotional campaign. This cut-out mascot visited local county schools to highlight the importance of cleaning up after your dog – again this was focus on educating the young.
Once launched, the advertising campaign instructed dog walkers to clean up after their pets and also encouraged people to report those who allow their dogs to litter in our county. Carlow County Council has been very successful with this campaign and habits have changed. The campaign remains visible since its 2012 launch.
